StART of an adventure

Hi! I'm Art as I'm sure that you know. If you didn't know that, well, that's odd because only my English teacher is supposed to see this. It's an English assignment thing. But if you are just a random person being random and randomly reading this random blog, then who am I to stop you?

I'm Art. I thought that was already established.

Anyway, let's get down to business. I'm going to talk about the very interesting English things we do in my English class and relate it all to things things such as Pokemon; Pokemon is awesome. I don't really get how this is supposed to pan out but I'll do my best.

Last class, apart from setting up this blog, we talked about the book: "The Destructiors" A book about a teenage gang who for some silly reason or another, decide to be complete jerks and wreck this old man's house. Now, if there is anything I've learned from Pokemon it's this: destruction is destructive. First: it starts out as an innocent jest but it quickly turns into something more-suddenly you're controlling monsters to go full throttle at ach other, each with their own attributes and skills, and they both launch their most powerful attacks at each other and than BOOM smoke appears, and before you know it you shifting entire landmasses and getting banned in Japan for referencing earthquakes.

Okay, maybe that's not QUITE what happened in the book, but there was destruction. The gang destroyed this guys house and I really didn't liked any of the characters in this book. Did I mention it was a beautiful house? It survived WWII

I believe that Wikipedia sums it up best: "The Destructors" is a 1954 short story about teenagers who destroy a house."

Anyway that brings up another thing that I want to bring up. I'm sure you know the difference between commercial fiction and literary fiction? Of course you do, you;'re a smart kid. But I'm going to explain it anyway. Well, I'm going to tell you one difference. One difference is that commercial fiction is the type of fiction that makes the reader feel entertained and happy. Literary fiction's purpose is to emphasize a point in an artistic form and broaden the reader's knowledge on life. That's all that really matters right now because now I'm going to lay some knowledge up in this here blog.

What is The Destructors" ? Is it commercial? Because if it is, I must have missed out on something or another because I didn't feel happy in the slightest when reading this book. Neither did the people I sit next to in English class. On the country we hated all those dang kids. Kids are stupid. They should all take a long hike off a short cliff. By that I mean, they should stop doing things like this. That was obvious. Is it literary? Perhaps. But I'm sure that everyone knows that gangs exist in the world and that they do silly gang activities like destroy things. If someone didn't know that...well they probably live like a Snorlax.

Well, I need to keep the Pokemon references going right? Gotta freaking reference em' all.

I suppose there are other things worth noting. such as summer reading books. One of my chosen books was Swamplandia! Yes, the exclamation point is part of the book title.

Something is off here however. There is one thing I learned in all my life playing Pokemon and it is this: Krookodile's are Ground type, which means they are weak to water. So how in the world is this one in water? Why is it green? Must be the shiny sprite.

You know, they actually looks kinda alike now that I think about it. Trust me I didn't think about it beforehand..

Swamplandia! is a rather confusing book about a family of Native Americans who crocodile wrestle for a living. As dangerous and stupid as that sounds, they desperately want to keep their little circus going (except for Kiwi) when their star wrestler- Mommy Hilola- dies. How did she die? A crocadile ripped her throat off. Sike! It was small pox. Sike! It was cancer. No, seriously it was cancer. I'm not joking this time. Cancer is bad.

Anyway, I have to say, today, just to get it out of my way, that the characters were much more enjoyable than they were in "The Destructors" -ay.

But it also shows how times were tough for businesses like theirs were and how Natives were forced to give up their family traditions and try to live life normally, despite the lack of outside connection.

So unlike, "The Destructors" I am arguing that "Swamplandia!" is in fact BOTH types of fiction. It was enjoyable to read and proves a point.

So I guess what I'm saying here is that Mr. Mullins is WRONG and that fiction can be both commercial and literary and it can also be written for the sole purpose of making you depressed.

Mr.Mullins is my English teacher by the way...since he will most likely read this, it's probably not the best idea to call him wrong.

He's awesome by the way. Just thought I'd say that so I might get extra cred- I mean because it's true. Uh, most definitely.

I hope that I get an A on this first blog because that would be fantastic and I hope you had as much fun reading it as I had playing Pokemon. Especially if you happen to be Mr. Mullins.

Until next time this is Art signing off. Take a chill pill and don't forget: Art is cool, yo.
